H1N1 – common questions

Are parents required to be present for the vaccinations?

Students age 15 or older can sign for their own vaccinations.  We have determined that we will require the presence of parents or guardians of children under the age of 15 [the age when a person is legally able to give their own consent for an immunization] at H1N1 immunization clinics provided by LCPH and our staff and volunteer nurses.

When can students and staff return to school/work safely after having the flu?  Some are saying 7 days after symptoms present and other are saying 24 hours fever-free (without medication).

The current recommendation (which is different from what CDC was saying in the spring) is that individuals should be fever-free for 24 hours without medication before returning to work/school.

How long does it take to develop immunity with the H1N1 vaccine?

It is similar to the seasonal flu vaccine, about 2 weeks.

Are there people who cannot get the nasal vaccine?

Nasal vaccine is not for use with children under 2; adults over 49 and pregnant women. It also is not to be used for anyone with asthma, diabetes, kidney disease, and certain other medical conditions.

Will it be 1 dose and 2 doses for the vaccine?

There are 2 doses required for children under 10 years old.

Reminders:

Community members can help Public Health “Slow the Spread” of this and any flu, by:

  • Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Washing your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs enter your body that way.
  • Trying to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • And, if you get sick, stay home and away from other people.

Community members are encouraged to continue checking in with their health care providers on vaccine availability.
